Cairo Tower Guide: Tickets, Rotating Restaurant & Best Views

The Cairo Tower rises 187 meters above Gezira Island in the middle of the Nile, and from its top the whole city opens up beneath you. You can see the domes of Islamic Cairo, the bridges across the river, the green gardens of Zamalek and, on a clear day, the Pyramids of Giza on the western horizon. Locals call it the second most famous landmark in Egypt after the pyramids themselves.

Wrapped in a lattice shaped like a lotus, the ancient flower of rebirth, the tower is a modern monument built from Cold War defiance. This Cairo Tower guide covers the tower's history, ticket prices and opening hours, how to get there, the revolving restaurant and café, the best views, and the best time to visit. It ends with quick answers and nearby places to add to your day.

Cairo Tower History: A Lotus Built on Defiance

The tower was built between 1956 and 1961 and opened in April 1961, under President Gamal Abdel Nasser. It was designed by the Egyptian architect Naoum Shebib. Its concrete lattice was inspired by the lotus, a symbol of creation in ancient Egyptian art, and its base is faced with granite from Aswan.

The Story Behind the Money

The most famous part of the tower's story is how it was paid for. According to documents published in Egypt, the United States sent money to Nasser through the CIA, represented by Kermit Roosevelt, as a personal gift. It was meant to persuade him to stop supporting the Algerian Revolution and other independence movements in Africa. Nasser refused to keep it. He passed the funds to the Egyptian government and used them to build a tower that could be seen from the US Embassy across the Nile.

Egyptians nicknamed it "Waqf Roosevelt," meaning "Roosevelt's endowment." The exact sum is disputed, with the tower's total cost usually estimated at between 1 and 3 million US dollars. Whatever the figure, the tower became a proud symbol of independence for a young republic.

Facts and Figures

  • Height: 187 meters (614 feet), about 40 meters taller than the Great Pyramid's original height.
  • Floors: 16, served by three elevators. The ride to the top takes about 45 seconds.
  • Observation deck: at about 143 meters, on the top floor.
  • Records: it was the tallest structure in Egypt until 1998 and the tallest in North Africa until 1982.
  • Restoration: a 15 million Egyptian pound renovation between 2006 and 2009 added a new visitor elevator, an emergency staircase, and LED lighting. The lights now change color at night and mark national holidays.

Cairo Tower Tickets, Opening Hours and Getting There

Cairo Tower Ticket Price

You buy Cairo Tower tickets at the counter at the base of the tower. Foreign visitors paid around 300 to 350 EGP in 2025 and 2026, while Egyptians and residents pay a lower local rate. Young children usually pay a reduced price or enter free. Prices change often with Egypt's currency, so check on the day. Some cards are accepted, but carrying cash is safer. Our guide to money in Egypt explains what to carry.

The ticket covers the elevator and the observation deck. The revolving restaurant and the café are paid separately.

Opening Hours

The tower is open every day of the year. Hours are usually 9am to around 1am in spring and summer, and from about 8am to midnight in autumn and winter. Some visitors report earlier closing times or a last entry around 11pm, so do not leave your visit until the very end of the night.

At busy times, especially at sunset and on Friday and Saturday evenings, you may wait for the elevator. Visitors are often called up in turn by a number on an electronic screen.

How to Get to Cairo Tower

The tower stands on Gezira Island in the Zamalek district, about 13 kilometers from the Giza pyramids.

  • Taxi or ride hailing: the easiest option. Uber and Careem both work well, and the drive from Downtown takes about 10 to 20 minutes across the Qasr El Nil Bridge, depending on traffic.
  • Metro: take Line 2 to Opera Station, beside the Cairo Opera House, then walk for about 10 to 15 minutes. You can also walk across Qasr El Nil Bridge from Tahrir Square and Sadat Station.
  • On a tour: many Cairo day tours and Cairo and Nile cruise tours can add the tower as an evening stop.

Plan around 45 minutes to an hour at the top, or two to three hours if you eat at the restaurant.

The Cairo Tower Restaurant and Café

The Revolving Restaurant

The Cairo Tower revolving restaurant sits just below the observation deck. It was designed to make a slow full turn about once an hour, so you see the whole city from your table during one meal. Some visitors report that it does not always rotate, so ask when you book.

The menu mixes Egyptian and international dishes, and it usually works on a set price or a minimum charge. Visitors tend to describe the food as decent rather than special. The setting is what you pay for. Book ahead for weekend evenings and sunset, and dress smart casual. Egypt's own dishes are worth trying more widely in the city, as our guide to traditional Egyptian food shows.

The Café

A café, often called the Sky Window, serves coffee, tea, fresh juices and light snacks. It is a cheaper way to sit with the view. There is also a small gift shop near the entrance at ground level.

For a different evening on the river, many travelers pair the tower with a Nile dinner cruise in Cairo.

What You Can See

From the 360 degree deck, viewers with the tower's telescopes or a good zoom lens can pick out:

  • West: the Giza Plateau and the Giza Pyramids Complex on clear days, with the edge of the desert beyond.
  • East: the Saladin Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali on the Mokattam Hills, with the minarets of Islamic Cairo below.
  • Close by: the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Tahrir Square, Downtown and the Nile bridges.
  • North and south: the river curving past Zamalek and Gezira Island.

Best Time to Visit Cairo Tower

  • For pyramid views: go on a clear morning, ideally from November to February, when the air is cleanest. Haze and dust often hide the pyramids, especially in summer and during the spring khamsin dust storms.
  • For photography: arrive about 30 minutes before sunset. You will see the city in golden light and then watch it switch on after dark. It is the busiest time, so expect a queue.
  • For fewer people: visit on a weekday morning.

Bring a wide angle lens for the city and a zoom lens for the pyramids. The deck is open to the air and can be windy, so take a light layer in winter. For weather by season, see our guide to the best time to cruise the Nile.

Near Cairo Tower

Zamalek is one of Cairo's greenest districts, full of riverside cafés and art galleries. The Cairo Opera House and the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art are a short walk away. A sunset felucca sail from the Corniche is a lovely way to see the tower from the water.

The tower also fits easily around Cairo's big sights. Spend the morning at the Grand Egyptian Museum or the pyramids, then come to the tower at sunset. Fitting the Tower Into a Cairo and Nile Trip

Most travelers spend two or three days in Cairo before or after a Nile cruise. A simple plan looks like this:

From Cairo, most travelers fly south to join their ship. Our guides to the Cairo to Luxor flight and the Cairo to Aswan flight explain the options. You can also browse Nile cruises from Cairo, which sail the full length of the river. For more ideas, read our guide to what to do in Egypt.

Witness the Grand Allure of Cairo From the Clouds

The Cairo Tower is more than a viewpoint. It is a concrete lotus raised with money meant to buy a president's silence, and a 45 second elevator ride takes you to the best overview of one of the world's greatest cities. Go on a clear morning for the pyramids, or at sunset for the lights. Stay for coffee at the café or dinner as the restaurant turns.

When the sun sinks behind Giza and the Nile turns to gold below you, Cairo reveals its timeless shape at a glance. To build the tower into a longer journey, explore our Egypt tour packages with a Nile cruise, the 8 Days Cairo and Nile Cruise package or a tailor made trip.
