Cairo to Luxor Flight: Travel Guide for Nile Cruisers

Cairo to Luxor Flight: Travel Guide for Nile Cruisers

For most travelers, the Cairo to Luxor flight is the hinge of an Egypt trip. You leave the Pyramids in the morning and are standing in front of Karnak Temple by the afternoon, with your Nile cruise cabin waiting a few minutes away. Less than an hour and a quarter in the air carries you across some 500 kilometres of desert and five thousand years of history.

This guide covers everything you need for that short hop: flight times, airlines, fares and baggage. It explains the airports in Egypt that matter for a Nile cruise, walks through the day from your Cairo hotel to the ship, and compares flying with the sleeper train and the road. It also shows when the flight is already included in your cruise package.

The scheduled Cairo to Luxor flight time is about 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes, gate to gate. The straight-line distance is around 500 km, compared with 650 to 670 km on the road along the Nile.

The time in the air is only part of the day, though. Add Cairo traffic, check-in, security and the short drive from Luxor International Airport to your ship, and the whole trip takes four to five hours. That is still far quicker than the 9 to 11 hours of the train or the road.

Which Airlines Fly From Cairo to Luxor?

EgyptAir is the national carrier and runs several flights a day between Cairo and Luxor, with early morning departures that suit cruise embarkation. Air Cairo, EgyptAir's lower-cost sister airline, also flies the route, including from Sphinx International Airport west of Cairo. Nile Air offers a few weekly or daily services depending on the season.

Schedules change between summer and winter, so always check the airline's own website before planning connections. Morning flights are the most popular because most ships start boarding and serving lunch around midday.

Airports in Egypt Every Nile Cruise Traveler Should Know

Airports in Egypt - Nile Cruise Holiday

Egypt has more than a dozen civil airports, but only a handful matter for a Nile cruise.

Airport Code Why it matters
Cairo International CAI Main international gateway and most domestic flights
Sphinx International SPX West of Cairo, handy for Giza hotels
Luxor International LXR Start or end of most Nile cruises
Aswan International ASW Start or end of Aswan cruises
Abu Simbel ABS Flights to the Abu Simbel temples
Hurghada International HRG Red Sea gateway, about 4 hours by road from Luxor
Marsa Alam International RMF Southern Red Sea resorts
Sharm El Sheikh International SSH Sinai resorts

If you are adding beach days, Nile cruises from Hurghada start with a road transfer instead of a flight.

Cairo International Airport

Cairo International Airport lies about 20 km north-east of downtown Cairo. EgyptAir's domestic flights use Terminal 3, while other airlines may use Terminal 2, so check your ticket. From Giza or downtown, allow 45 minutes to an hour and a half depending on traffic, and aim to arrive two hours before departure.

Sphinx International Airport

Sphinx International Airport sits on the Cairo to Alexandria Desert Road, west of Giza. It is far closer to the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum than Cairo International. In 2025, Air Cairo listed flights from Sphinx to Luxor and Aswan, which can save a long drive across Cairo if you stay near the Pyramids.

Luxor International Airport

Luxor International Airport is on the East Bank, about 10 to 20 minutes by car from the city centre and the cruise docks along the Corniche. It is small and easy to get through. Your guide or driver will usually meet you right outside the arrivals hall.

Aswan International Airport

Aswan International Airport lies south-west of the city, roughly 25 to 30 minutes from the cruise docks. Flights from Cairo take about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes. It is the airport to use if your cruise sails from Aswan to Luxor.

Abu Simbel Airport

A short flight of about 45 minutes links Aswan with Abu Simbel Airport, a few minutes from the temples. It is the easiest way to reach Abu Simbel and avoids the 4:00 a.m. road start from Aswan.

Step by Step: From Your Cairo Hotel to Your Nile Cruise

A typical morning on a cruise package runs like this:

  1. Hotel pick-up, around 4:00 to 6:00 a.m. Your driver collects you from your Cairo or Giza hotel. Many hotels can prepare a breakfast box.
  2. Airport check-in. Expect a security check at the terminal entrance, then check-in, then a second screening before the gate. Gates close about 30 minutes before departure.
  3. Flight to Luxor, about 1 hour. Keep passports and valuables in your hand luggage.
  4. Arrival and meet. Your Egyptologist guide meets you at arrivals and drives you to the ship.
  5. Boarding and lunch. Check in on board, have lunch, then head out for the afternoon visits to Karnak and Luxor Temple.

The 5-day Cairo, Luxor and Aswan cruise follows this pattern, with the morning flight to Luxor and the return flight from Aswan both included.

Arriving in Egypt and Flying On the Same Day

Many travelers want to land in Cairo and fly straight to Luxor. It is possible, but leave a buffer. If your international and domestic flights are on separate tickets, you will clear immigration, collect your bags and check in again. Allow at least three to four hours between flights.

Get your Egyptian e-visa ($25 for a single entry) before you travel to speed up arrival. If your international flight lands late in the evening, it is usually better to spend one night in Cairo and fly the next morning. Some travelers also fly directly into Luxor on seasonal flights from Europe, skipping Cairo altogether.

Baggage, Security and Check-In Tips

Baggage and Packing for Egypt.webp
Baggage and Packing for Egypt - Nile Cruise Holiday
  • Pack soft bags where possible; they are easier to load into cars and cabins.
  • Keep medication, passports, cash and a change of clothes in your hand luggage.
  • Label your bags inside and out with your name and a local phone number.
  • Expect two or three security checks at Egyptian airports, with shoes and belts sometimes removed.
  • Power banks must go in hand luggage, not checked bags.
  • Our packing list for a Nile cruise covers the rest.

Should You Fly to Luxor or Aswan?

Fly to Luxor or Aswan - Nile Cruise Holiday

It depends on which way your cruise sails. Luxor to Aswan cruises usually last four nights and start with a flight to Luxor. Aswan to Luxor cruises are usually three nights and start with a flight to Aswan. Our comparison of Luxor to Aswan vs Aswan to Luxor explains the difference, and you can browse cruises from Luxor and cruises from Aswan.

Most packages fly you in to one city and out of the other, so you do not double back.

Flight vs Sleeper Train vs Road

Flight vs Sleeper Train vs Road - Nile Cruise Holiday.webp
Flight vs Sleeper Train vs Road - Nile Cruise Holiday
Option Journey time Approximate cost Best for
Flight About 1 hour in the air, 4 to 5 hours door to ship $50 to $150 one way Short trips, most cruise travelers
Sleeper train 9 to 11 hours overnight Varies widely by season and cabin; meals included Saving a hotel night, slow travel
Day train 9 to 10 hours Low Budget travelers
Private car 7 to 10 hours $150 to $350 per vehicle Stops at Dendera and Abydos
Bus 10 to 12 hours Lowest Very tight budgets

For a cruise of three or four nights, the flight is almost always the right choice. The sleeper train, which leaves Cairo in the evening and arrives in Luxor early the next morning, suits travelers with more time who enjoy the experience. Train arrival times can slip, so avoid it if your ship sails the same morning.

Can Your Nile Cruise Package Include the Flight?

Yes, and it often costs less than booking separately. Nile cruises from Cairo include return domestic flights, private transfers and a guide. Options include the 4-day Cairo to Aswan cruise, the 4-day cruise with Abu Simbel and the 8-day Cairo, Aswan and Luxor cruise.

If you want time in Cairo as well, Cairo and Nile cruise tours such as the 8-day Cairo and Nile cruise package include hotel nights, domestic flights and all transfers. For a slower journey without flights, the 12-day long Nile cruise sails from Cairo to Luxor through Middle Egypt.

What to Do if You Arrive Early in Luxor

An early flight often leaves time before boarding. Drop your bags with your guide and visit the Luxor Museum or walk the Corniche. With a spare day, cross to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings. Our guide to things to do in Luxor has more ideas, and if you end in Aswan, see things to do in Aswan.

Discover the Perfect Sky Path for Your Nile Cruise

The Cairo to Luxor flight is short, but getting it right shapes the whole cruise. Fly in the morning, keep a buffer after international arrivals, and let your package handle the transfers. In just over an hour, the sprawl of Cairo gives way to the palm-lined Nile, and the rest of the journey moves at the river's pace.
