December and January are the heart of Egypt's winter high season, and both are excellent months for a Nile cruise. The sun shines almost every day, the temples of Luxor and Aswan are comfortable to explore at midday, and the evenings on deck call for a jacket rather than a fan. Yet the two months are not the same trip. December brings Christmas cheer and the year's highest prices, while January is a touch cooler, a little calmer after the first week, and often better value.
On a clear winter morning, with mist lifting off the water and the West Bank cliffs turning gold, it is easy to see why travelers have chosen these weeks for more than a century.
This guide compares Egypt in December or January for a Nile cruise, covering weather, crowds, prices, holidays and festive events, what to pack, and which month suits which traveler.
December vs January Weather on the Nile
Daytime and Night Temperatures
On paper the difference is small. In Luxor, December averages a high of about 24°C and a low of about 9°C, while January averages about 23°C by day and 7°C at night. Aswan, further south, is slightly warmer, with highs of about 24°C to 25°C in December and 23°C in January, and nights around 10°C to 11°C.
The number to watch is the night. Temperatures can fall by 15°C between lunchtime and midnight, and in January early mornings in Luxor can feel genuinely cold, especially on a hot air balloon flight or a sunrise visit to the Valley of the Kings. Record lows in Luxor have dipped close to freezing in both months.
| December | January | |
|---|---|---|
| Luxor average high | about 24°C | about 23°C |
| Luxor average low | about 9°C | about 7°C |
| Aswan average high | about 24°C to 25°C | about 23°C |
| Aswan average low | about 11°C | about 10°C |
| Cairo average high | about 21°C | about 19°C |
| Rain in Upper Egypt | almost none | almost none |
Sunshine, Wind and Daylight
Both months are almost rainless in Upper Egypt, with close to 290 hours of sunshine a month. Days are short, though. Around the winter solstice the sun sets in Luxor at about five in the afternoon, so excursions start early and sunset comes before dinner.
The river breeze makes the sun deck feel cooler than the temperature suggests. In both months, and especially in January, many ships move dinner indoors and guests on deck after dark wrap up in blankets. If you are adding Cairo, expect it to be a few degrees cooler than Luxor, with the occasional light shower.
What the Weather Means for Sightseeing
For temple visits, both months are close to ideal. You can walk the Karnak halls, climb to the terraces of Hatshepsut's Temple and explore Edfu and Kom Ombo without the heat that makes summer sightseeing hard work. December's slightly warmer afternoons suit travelers who like to swim in the ship's pool, which is often too chilly in January. Our guide to the best time to cruise the Nile compares every month of the year.
Crowds and Prices: December or January?
The Christmas and New Year Peak
The busiest period of the whole year runs from about 20 December to 5 January. Ships fill up, popular sailings sell out months ahead, and the famous sites, from the Valley of the Kings to Philae Temple, are at their most crowded. Specialist operators commonly add a holiday supplement of roughly 20% to 40% over normal winter rates for these weeks, and luxury ships such as the Oberoi Zahra and the Sanctuary Sun Boat IV can be booked up to a year in advance for Christmas week.
Early December and Mid-January
Outside that window, both months become noticeably easier. Early December, from the start of the month until about the 18th, has high-season weather with fewer families and standard winter prices. Mid to late January, once the New Year travelers have gone home, is calmer again, though still busy by any normal standard. Egyptian schools also break for a mid-year holiday in late January or early February, which can bring more domestic visitors to Luxor and Aswan.
How Far Ahead to Book
For Christmas or New Year, book at least three to four months ahead, and six months or more for luxury ships and honeymoons. For early December or mid-January, two to three months is usually enough. Holidays and Events in December and January
Christmas and New Year on a Nile Cruise
Many ships mark Christmas with decorations in the lounge, a special dinner and evening entertainment, and New Year's Eve usually brings a gala dinner and a midnight celebration on deck. Programs vary by ship, and the gala dinner is sometimes charged as a supplement, so ask exactly what is included before you book. Our guide to what to expect from a Nile cruise at Christmas covers the festive program in detail.
Coptic Christmas on 7 January
Egypt's Coptic Christians celebrate Christmas on 7 January, following the Julian calendar, and it is a public holiday. It is a religious occasion rather than a street festival, with midnight services on the eve. If your trip includes Cairo, the Hanging Church in Coptic Cairo is the best-known church to see, though it is busy with worshippers around the holiday. Our guide to Islamic Cairo suggests more of the old city to explore.
Onboard Evenings in Both Months
Whatever the date, most cruises include a galabeya party, where guests dress in traditional Egyptian robes, and many larger ships add a Tanoura whirling dervish show or belly dancing. Read more in our guide to facilities and entertainment on a Nile cruise.
Check the Esna Lock
Ships sailing between Luxor and Aswan pass through the Esna Lock, which closes for maintenance for a few weeks, usually once in early summer and once in winter. When it is closed, some itineraries change or passengers transfer by road. Ask your operator whether a closure falls on your dates.
Which Month in Winter Suits You?
Choose December If
- You want to spend Christmas or New Year somewhere unforgettable and do not mind paying for it.
- You prefer slightly warmer afternoons and might use the pool.
- You are traveling with children during school holidays; our Nile cruise with kids guide helps you plan.
- You can travel in early December, which gives you winter weather at standard prices.
Choose January If
- You want better value, especially after 6 January.
- You are happy with cool mornings and evenings in exchange for comfortable sightseeing.
- You prefer fewer families and a quieter atmosphere on board.
- You want to add Abu Simbel or a Luxor hot air balloon ride, when crisp, clear mornings give some of the best views of the year.
Our Verdict
For the festive experience, choose December. For the best balance of weather, prices and crowds, choose mid to late January or early December, and avoid the last ten days of December if budget matters. If your dates are fully flexible, November and February offer similar weather with slightly warmer days.
Big Ship or Dahabiya in Winter?
Large cruise ships have heated or air conditioned cabins and indoor restaurants, which matter on cold nights. A dahabiya is a wonderful way to sail, but these small sailing boats are less insulated and much of life happens on open decks, so bring extra warm layers in January. Our dahabiya vs Nile cruise guide compares the two, and you can browse luxury Nile cruises for well-equipped ships.
Packing and Planning Tips for a Winter Nile Cruise
What to Pack
Think layers rather than heavy winter clothing:
- Light cotton or linen shirts and trousers for warm afternoons
- A fleece or warm jacket for early starts, evenings and the sun deck
- A scarf and light hat; a beanie is welcome on January mornings
- Comfortable closed walking shoes for uneven temple floors
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a sun hat, since the winter sun is still strong
- Smart casual clothes for the captain's dinner or the New Year gala
- Clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples and churches
